The game begins with players working together to build the city of Baldur's Gate, placing tiles to create the catacombs, alleys, and various locations. However, the tranquility is soon shattered as a horrific evil turns one of the adventurers against the others, leading to a race for survival.
Players must face an onslaught of fearsome monsters from the Dungeons & Dragons lore, such as beholders and mind flayers, as they fight to uncover the traitor in their midst. The game's replayability is further enhanced by the fact that the adventure is never the same twice, with players returning to Baldur's Gate to discover new challenges and surprises.
The game's contents include a comprehensive rulebook, two haunt books (the Traitor's Tome and Secrets of Survival), a variety of start tiles, including the Elfsong Tavern, Inner Chamber, and Kitchen, as well as the Catacomb Landing and Kitchen Basement. Additionally, the game features six prepainted plastic adventurer figures, six two-sided adventurer cards, 30 plastic clips, eight dice, and a turn/damage track.
The 86 cards in the game cover a range of events, items, omens, and player aids, while the 215 tokens and 42 tiles, comprising 13 building tiles, 14 street tiles, and 15 catacomb tiles, provide the foundation for the ever-evolving city of Baldur's Gate.
