Fortress Europa recreates the Allied campaign in Western Europe from D-Day to March 1945. The Allied player must select an invasion site and make a successful landing, breakout of the beachhead, drive across France, and push deep into Germany. The German player, on the other hand, must prevent the Allied invasion or else conduct an orderly withdrawal across France, constantly delaying the Allies, and then counterattacking in the winter.

The game begins with the Allied player choosing an invasion site, a critical decision that can determine the success or failure of the campaign. Once the landing is made, the Allies must quickly break out of the beachhead and establish a foothold on the continent. This is no easy task, as the German player will fiercely resist the advance, using a variety of tactics to slow the Allied progress.

As the Allies push inland, they must navigate through the rugged terrain of France, facing a determined enemy at every turn. The German player will attempt to delay the Allies' advance by destroying bridges, laying mines, and launching strategic counterattacks. The Allies must carefully manage their resources and logistics to maintain the momentum of their offensive.

Reaching the German heartland is the ultimate goal for the Allied player, but the journey will not be without its challenges. The German player will fight tooth and nail to defend their home soil, and may even resort to launching a major counteroffensive in the winter months, when the Allies' supply lines are stretched thin and the weather conditions are less favorable.

Throughout the game, both players must carefully manage their resources, including manpower, equipment, and reinforcements. The Allies must balance the need for speed with the need for securing their flanks and rear, while the Germans must decide when to hold their ground and when to retreat to more defensible positions.
